Hey there!!!
Internships, who likes to work for free??? I know most of us would hate to work for free, unless its community service or it involves helping people in need. But believe it or not, internships have great advantages beyond a simple pay check.
I did two unpaid internships. One of them was three times a week, for 4 hours each day. So it was about 12 hours a week, which wasn’t bad at all. I actually enjoyed it a lot, because I was given the opportunity to learn as much as possible about laws, domestic violence cases, child abuse cases, and much more. Since I majored in Criminal Justice, it was the perfect internship considering what interested me. However, at times it did get annoying because I had to go three times a week, no excuses; which meant I would miss out on lots of events my parents took part off. However, thanks to that internship I became more mature, responsible, and I was also able to improve my skills and build connections and friendships.
My second internship was a great experience as well. Although that internship focused more on social work/field I truly liked it. Through that internship I was able to but my skills to work and help many different people solve their personal problems. That internship also got me a great reference letter, plus 3 college credits.
So I defiantly recommend people to complete as much internship as possible. Don’t get discouraged just because it might be unpaid. Although there are a few internships paid, the majority 90% are unpaid, however always focus on the positive sides of it. Think about how good it will look on your resume, the extra college credits you will get out of this internship, the connections and skills you will build and improve, plus the great reference letters you will be able to get.
In addition, if you are lucky enough you might even be asked to work there once your internship time is over. Unfortunately for me, on both cases I wasn’t asked to work there because for the first internship I was supposed to have a Master’s degree, or a Law degree, and for the other internship due to lack of work they weren’t hiring, plus I also needed to be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in order to work there. However, that didn’t discourage me from finding a job somewhere else. I made sure I left a great exit impression in order to get great references, and you should do the same.
In other words, internships are great to teach you more about the field you are planning in studying, increasing and improving your skills, your communication and social skills, your connections, and opening many different doors for your future !!!
Good luck with finding the best internship!!!
Thanks for reading and don’t forget to SmiLe =)
